Hi Boys and Girls!

If you’re in the UK you’ve probably heard of the new TV show called The Royal Bodyguard, starring Sir David Jason. He made his name playing the main character Derek “Del Boy” Trotter in the BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses from 1981, and in 2006, Jason topped the poll to find TV’s 50 Greatest Stars, as part of ITV’s 50th anniversary celebrations. His latest offering, as Captain Guy Hubble who gets promoted by the Queen to the Royal Bodyguard, premiered on BBC1 over the Christmas.

I was extremely excited to start watching this programme and must admit I was slightly disappointed at the first episode. Admittedly, I was already beginning to yawn and thought the series might have been better off being called The Royal Snoozeguard.

I was willing to give the series the benefit of the doubt, but the second episode (entitled The Siege of Blenheim), was so dreadful ladies and gentlemen that it was actually cringeworthy.

This is a real shame since Hat Trick Productions who created The Royal Bodyguard have made some brilliant stuff in the past. The writers of the show, Mark Bussell and Justin Sbresni, were the main writers behind the Armstrong & Miller show which won a BAFTA in 2010 for Best Comedy Show.

In a way though, having something so poor be written by BAFTA winners and broadcast on such a revered national television channel as BBC1 gives hope to all those struggling writers, directors and producers out there: even if your content is truly rubbish you’ll still have a shot at fame, money and success!
