Luke Wright looking good in a suit…!

Luke is host and co-curator of Latitude’s Poetry Arena and one of the UK’s top stand-up poets. The author and star of five solo stage shows, he is also poet in residence on BBC Radio 4’s Sony Award-winning Saturday Live. Working with documentary makers he has had two major poetic works commissioned by Channel 4. Luke will not only play host for the next Longitude event, he will also be treating the audience to his new poems so don’t miss this Latitude favourite!

DOC BROWN

Doc Brown the rapper turned comedian…..!

Described by Time Out as, ‘A seamless mix of truly inspired hip-hop and stand-up. He’s a total star… an utter joy‘, rapper turned comedian Doc Brown, performs with his tongue in cheek take on hip-hop culture. A regular on the circuit and with appearances on The Inbetweeners, Rev and Miranda, Doc is a must see act.

MISS BEHAVE

Miss Behave and her crazy performances!

The wonderful Miss Behave can turn her hand to anything from Mistress of Ceremonies to comedy to cabaret to sword swallowing and beyond. Time Out New York commented on one Miss Behave show as being ‘From sublime to ridiculous to downright sexy…genuinely edgy and genuinely funny.’ Prepare to be shocked, dazzled and everything in between at this one-off Longitude performance.

CATHERINE A.D.

Catherine A.D. and her amazing music…!

A stunning pianist and vocalist Catherine A.D.’s album Communion was named one of NME’s 20 Cult/Experimental Albums of 2011. Described by Metro as, ‘a voice that sounds like a lake of black honey’, be sure to see this ethereal beauty performing an intimate gig at Longitude ahead of her Latitude appearance.

It was with great excitement that I went along to the Longitude Comedy Night at the Century Club on Monday 16th April. Not only is the venue perfectly located, but the stage was perfect for what was on offer: an intimate evening sitting on cushions, relaxing to poetry, comedy and music….bliss!

Needless to say, you can trust Latitude for choosing only the most talented of folk to perform, and the night did not disappoint. To kick off proceedings, poet and compere Ross Sutherland hilariously declared his undying love for audience member Reuben by tweaking an already prepared poem in his notebook.When it turned out he had made up the entire text and that his notebook was in fact blank, cue gasps of amazement at his incredible talent.

He was followed by the fantastically talented Sabrina Mahfouz who brought to the stage a preview of her upcoming show at the Bush Theatre, whilst re-telling us a fictional story from her show regarding human nature in the eyes of a former stripper. Three words: gripping, entertaining and thrilling.

Next up were Cardinal Burns, and what an entrance they made. The fact that E4 have commissioned a sketch show from the group that will be aired in May is a testament to their incredible comedic talent. They are just naturally funny people and had the audience in stitches.

Sabrina Mahfouz is a playwright, poet and performer. She draws inspiration from – amongst many things – her diverse cultural heritage, to create theatre and poetry that is unpretentious, relevant, accessible and punchy. Her debut solo show, Dry Ice, was recently nominated for The Stage Awards Best Solo Show at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2011.

Sissy And The Blisters - every gig needs some rock 'n' roll right?

Sissy & The Blisters, formed in 2010, Sissy & The Blisters are an English-Australian four-piece whose angular guitar rock recalls The Doors’ rock n roll sensibility shot through with a dash of Northern English goth and a splash of rockabilly. Variously compared to acts like Stranglers, Cramps and GallonDrunk the mood of their live shows tends towards mayhem, in the best sense of the word.

And of course let’s not forget Latitude Festival in July!

It’s Easter and it’s time to spend quality lunches, dinners and chocolate-hunting with your family. And so with some spare time on my hands after a month in New York I subscribed to Netflix (which is an incredible resource by the way!) and started discovering some old gems that I never previously had the chance to see.

This dog loves Netflix too...!

One such gem is of course “Harold & Kumar Get The Munchies” (originally titled “Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle”), a classic of the stoner movies, and a new favourite I never realised would be.

Those chaps are simply awesome. Kal Penn who plays Kumar, is hilarious as the lazy stoner best friend, whilst John Cho who plays Harold is perfect as the hard-working stoner office worker.

You may actually remember from this iconic scene in the first American Pie:

After appearing in a bunch of movies such as Son of the Mask, Epic Movie and Superman Returns, Kal left Hollywood to begin work as the Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement in the Obama administration in January 2009….!

He briefly left his post to film the third instalment of the Harold & Kumar movies, and is now firmly back at the White House.

What next for the Harold & Kumar boys?

Kal is firmly staying put at the White House whereas John’s success has been boosted by his role in the JJ Abrams Star Trek remake. He can next be seen in Total Recall as well as another Star Trek sequel.

I am back in Good Old Blighty! And boy did I miss the smell of fish and chips, chicken curry and spilt beer on the tube. There just really is something so special about London.

London is preparing for the Olympics this Summer

Apologies for the lack of posts but New York simply got the better out of me and I was hard-pressed to find a decent internet connection for long during my stay over there.

Needless to say however I am back on track beginning with my “Movie of the Week” on Sunday…woohoo!

Yesterday I was specially invited to a preview screening of Whit Stillman’s new film Damsels in Distress. On the way there I stopped off at an all-american bar with my friends at Buffalo Picture House where they serve $2 buds…amazing! I was also in the mood for a big plate of nachos, and boy, they were HUGE!

After stuffing myself with beer and nachos I headed over to 550 Madison Avenue for the screening…OMG that was an experience! The building itself is absolutely huge. It feels like stepping into your own little Sony Entertainment world and it is simply awesome.

The kind press lady at Falco Ink even handed me a movie ticket (just like the real thing!) which I had to hand over to the security guard at the entrance of the screening. He wouldn’t let me keep it or allow a picture and so I sadly can’t show you guys….thankfully though I had a special bar of soap handed over to me at the entrance by the kind press lady…!

The Sony Screening Room is apparently the best one in New York, and I must say it doesn’t disappoint. The seats are huge, comfy and spacious which makes the movie experience all the better.

The movie itself was a wonderful piece of cinema. Stillman hadn’t released anything theatrically since The Last Days of Disco in 1998, and it was reassuring to witness Stillman at his best and not having lost his touch one bit.

The dialogue was incredibly witty, intelligent and amusing. The performances were perfect and the cast well put together. Having closed the Venice Film Festival in 2011 the film has so far been garnering some brilliant reviews. I cannot wait to see how it does at the box office!

The film has an awesome ensemble cast that includes Greta Gerwig, Carrie MacLemore, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Analeigh Tipton and Adam Brody.

It is now Day 9 of my Big New York Adventure and the weather is getting hot hot hot over here! I woke to a stunning clear blue sky, 20 degrees celsius and the biggest urge to go for a run in the “World’s Biggest Backyard”, aka Central Park.

I’d however completely forgotten how absolutely massive the park was, and up panting and sweating profusely 20mns in…..! Needless to say though the experience was simply wonderful and highly recommended for anyone living or visiting New York…..it’s such a unique place!

I was sweating almost as much as French President Sarkozy!

As I hadn’t even eaten though I decided to treat myself to Wholefoods and ate a delicious cold combo of salmon penne, chicken curry, sweet potatoes and mushrooms…delicious! I adore Whole Foods and wish them all the best.

Whole Foods is simply so delicious!
